Every year, fifth-generation winemaker Scipione Giuliani scours the vineyards of Italy in search of the ideal grapes to use in his Il Papavero red blend. This versatile red reminds us of an authentic house wine you'd find at a trattoria in Italy. Delicious with or without food, it pairs effortlessly with a range of classic Italian dishes. As wine critic Richard Neill once wrote, "If all table wines tasted this good, no one would leave the table!" The value is second to none, and as you can already guess, it's ideal for weeknights and parties. The secret? Scipione selects the ripest, most flavorsome grapes from the top-performing regions to ensure Il Papavero is always supple with red berry fruit. Sangiovese from the Marches or Emilia-Romagna, Montepulciano from the Abruzzo, plus Negroamaro and Nero d’Avola from Puglia and the south—a perfect combination. Crafted by the legendary Paolo Masi with hand-harvested grapes from the rolling hills above Rufina, in Tuscany, Collezione di Paolo Chianti Riserva is a structured, medium-bodied bestseller with dark fruit and earth flavors hemmed in by firm tannins. Part of the wine's success is undoubtably tied to its terroir: One of the smallest subzones of Chianti, it's a little way removed from most of the rest of the region, with high-elevation vineyards that climb up to 1600 feet above sea level. This creates a wide day-night temperrature swing, that keeps the fruit extra fresh, while abdundant sunshine ripens the grapes to perfection. But the winemaker has a lot to do with it, too. For over two decades, Paolo (below) has been earning heaps of praise for making his family’s wines better and better. Robert Parker has said that “Paolo Masi has made an excellent impression with the estate wines of his family property.” Italy’s top wine guide, Gambero Rosso, meanwhile, says his wines offer “irreproachably clean fruit and abundant personality.” For this bottling, Paolo insisted on using only the finest, top-grade oak barrels to age the wine for 14 months. It was then aged even longer in bottle—about 10 months—which means it's ready and delicious right now, but will also develop nicely over the next few years. Previous vintages have earned 90+ points and been called "composed and juicy" and "pretty and understated" by top critic James Suckling. Primitivo, a cousin of California’s fruit-packed Zinfandel, is the godfather of southern Italian grapes. Pillastro Primitivo Puglia

If you haven’t had the Barbaneras' sumptuous, barrel-aged Super Tuscan yet, now’s the perfect time. A perennial favorite of leading Italian critic Luca Maroni, Vecciano once again sports 99 points (Mr. Maroni’s highest score).

The Barbanera family has done it again. Their sumptuous Super Tuscan red is truly super in every sense—now more than ever. Aged for 18 months in fine French oak, it’s a classic blend of ripe, red-fruited Sangiovese and deep, black-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon. Past vintages have been critical smash-hits, with 90+ point scores from leading Italian wine critic Luca Maroni. And along comes the 2021 release… It's the latest in a long line of vintages to win 99 points from Maroni (the highest score on the critic’s trademark 99-point scale). He has called it “an absolute masterpiece”—you’ll know why on first sip. Vecciano is brimming with loads of ripe black fruit character, balanced with complex nuances of baking spices and earth; smooth and velvety tannins introduce a mile-long finish. Winemaker Leonardo Palumbo has a rule—he’ll only put his name on a wine that he’s really happy with. His sumptuous, acclaimed red is made from three top Puglian grapes: Nero di Troia, Negroamaro and Primitivo. Velvety with dark, spiced fruit.

Deep in southern Italy, Puglia (nicknamed the stiletto heel of Italy) is a haven for authentic, rich reds that over-deliver for their price tag. “Italy’s star continues to rise in the wine world, and Puglia is providing some of the fuel for liftoff,” writes Wine Spectator. As head winemaker for the highly respected Torrevento estate, Leonardo Palumbo has crafted his share of impressive wines. For this red, he chose an equal blend of three native grape varieties (hence the cuvée name ‘Tre Terzi’ or ‘three thirds’). When he tasted the final wine, Leonardo was so proud of his creation that he gave it his name—a longstanding tradition in his family of winemakers. It's a smooth, full-fruited blend of Puglia’s best grapes: Nero di Troia for its violet aromas, silky tannins and elegant peppery fruit; Negroamaro for deep color, dark plum and earthy richness; and Primitivo for plum hints and deeper bass notes. They make a perfect ensemble—lots of dark, juicy flavor with ripeness and depth.
